Eating out with a baby: the 2 kg trick that changes everything

Ask any parent what killed their café habit and they'll describe the same scene: arriving to find no high chair, or one sticky survivor with a missing strap, then eating one-handed with a wriggling baby on a lap. The fix isn't staying home. It's bringing the seat with you.

The maths of 2 kilograms

Packed in its tote, the Hannie weighs about 2 kg with the cushion included, and slides under most pram baskets. That's the whole logistics story. It lives under the pram or in the car boot, and every venue with ordinary dining chairs becomes baby-friendly: the café with the good coffee, the pub on Sunday, the beach-house rental with zero baby gear.

Where it earns its keep

Cafés and restaurants. Attach it to a standard chair in under a minute and your baby sits at the table, at table height, in a seat they already know. Familiar seat, familiar routine. Babies eat better in seats they recognise.

Holidays. Accommodation "cot and high chair available" claims are optimistic at best. A 2 kg chair in the boot removes the gamble, and the dishwasher-safe tray means clean-up works the same anywhere.

The grandparents' place. Rather than buying a second high chair to live at Grandma's, the seat travels with the baby. Every house with a dining chair is equipped.

The eating-out kit that actually fits in a nappy bag

  • The Hannie in its tote (under the pram)
  • Two bibs: one for the meal, one for the ride home
  • A damp cloth in a zip bag, because the tray wipes clean but faces don't
  • A few familiar foods, even if you're ordering for them

One habit worth keeping

The rules from home travel with the seat: 3-point harness clipped every time, a sturdy four-legged chair underneath (not a stool, see the fit guide), and an adult within arm's reach. Same seat, same rules, anywhere. That's the point.
